Mary A. Mekus

Mary Ann Mekus, age 85, of Bryan, Ohio, passed away at 2:30 P.M. on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at the CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.Mary was born on April 2, 1933, in Jewell, Ohio, the daughter of Carl and Virginia (Coressel) Mekus. She was a 1951 graduate of Defiance High School and a 1954 graduate of St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Toledo. Following graduation, Mary served as a US Navy nurse at Camp Pendelton, California. After her military service, she worked in various hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and as a home health nurse until her retirement in 1995.Mary enjoyed family gatherings, watching Notre Dame sports, reading, playing cards, golfing and occasional trips to the casino.Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Ferdie Mekus. She is survived by her sister, Sharyn (Robert) Wheeler, of Bryan; brother, Thomas (Joyce) Mekus, of Defiance; nephew, Scott (Trina) Mekus, of Edwardsville, Illinois; niece, Jennifer Layne, of Defiance; four great nephews and two great nieces.A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 2, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 610 South Portland Street, Bryan, with Father David Tscherne officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Private burial will be at a later date at St. Michael’s The Ridge Cemetery. Krill Funeral Service of Bryan has been entrusted with the arrangements.Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church or CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
