Deloy E. Appel, age 80, of rural Ney, Ohio, died at 3:55 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009, in his home after an illness of several months. Mr. Appel was a 1946 graduate of Farmer High School, where he was a member of the 1946 state championship basketball team. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. He was also a lifelong farmer and was a partner in Del-Mar Farms with his wife, Mary. Mr. Appel was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, where he formerly served as treasurer and was a youth advisor, the United States Trotting Association, the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association and Farmer American Legion Post #137. He also formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Ney Co-op Grain Company, of which he was a past president, and was a former 4-H advisor. Deloy E. Appel was born on January 6, 1929, in Farmer Township of Defiance County, the son of Lelan and Vanda L. (Hinsch) Appel. He married Mary Louise Mitchell on November 6, 1954, in Farmer, Ohio, and she survives. Mr. Appel is also survived by two sons, Edwin Appel and Kevin Appel, both of Hicksville, Ohio, one daughter, Sandra (T.J.) McClure, of White Lake, Michigan, six grandchildren, Sean, Brent, Jeffrey and Marissa Appel, and Jessica and Travis McClure, four sisters, Elowene Finzer, of Hicksville, Ohio, Norma (Robert) Andres and Frances Schlachter, both of Bryan, Ohio, and Karen (Nelson) Bell, of Toledo, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Katie Appel, on July 8, 2005. Visitation for Deloy E. Appel will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, from 3-8 p.m. in the Krill Funeral Home, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan, Ohio. Services will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church near Edgerton, Ohio, with Pastor Chris Sigmon officiating. The family will receive visitors in the church for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Farmer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in the name of Deloy E. Appel may be given to Zion Lutheran Church, the American Heart Association, or to the American Red Cross.
