Mary Louise (Burns) Houck (Mary Lou), age 70, of Bryan, Ohio, died at 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at home with her family. She left this world after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. Her "never give up" attitude allowed her three more wonderful and memory-filled years with her family. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Bryan, Ohio, and its Rosary Altar Society, Suburban Golf Club, and the Nifty Fifty Investment Club. Mary worked at Bryan Community Hospital and retired from the Bryan County Courthouse as a court recorder for the probate court. Her life centered around her family and she loved to travel with them in her retirement years. Mary L. Houck was born on August 5, 1938, in Sherwood, Ohio, the daughter of Lillian (Studer) and Harold Burns. She married Jerry Houck on August 24, 1960, in Blakeslee, Ohio, and he survives. Surviving in addition to her husband, Jerry, are three children, Joel (Lora) Houck of Dayton, Maryland, Jared (Abby) Houck, of Carmel, Indiana, and Jenny (Katherine) Houck, of Rock Hill, South Carolina. She also leaves behind her pride and joy, eight grandchildren, Madeleine, Emma, Garrett, Olivia, Caroline, Lillian, Eleanor, and Spencer. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, DeVon Werder, two sisters-in-law, Barb Burns and Jewell (Tom) Short, five nieces,two nephews and her mother-in-law, Helene Houck, of Bryan, Ohio. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Dorothy (Burns) Werder, one brother, Howard Burns, and a nephew, DeVon Werder, Jr. Services for Mary L. Houck will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bryan, Ohio, with interment to follow in Fountain Grove Cemetery, Bryan. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, February 27, in the Krill Funeral Home, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan, with a scripture service to be held at 8:00 p.m., and also in the church one hour prior to the service, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Memorial contributions in the name of Mary L. Houck may be made to Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers Hospice.
