Virgil O. Sloan, age 86, of rural Stryker, Ohio, died on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice near Defiance, Ohio. He was born on September 15, 1923, near Stryker, the son of Otis and Dora (Mann) Sloan. On August 6, 1950, he married Wilma Willson of Ai, Ohio. The family celebrates his life as a caring, devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. Mr. Sloan was a 1941 graduate of Stryker High School and helped run the family farm south of Stryker. He and Wilma owned the Stryker Meat Locker in the 1950s. They also owned and operated the Sunset View Camp near Chapleau, Ontario, for six years during that same period. He was a man who loved the Lord and devoted his entire life to leading a number of non-denominational Christians. He so loved to tell the stories of his life and of the adventures he experienced while owning the camp in Ontario. He loved his family, friends, gardening, planting his numerous flower beds, reading the Bible and helping others. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilma Jean; his two sons, James (Rosalie) Sloan, of Sacramento, California, and John (Susan) Sloan, of El Dorado Hills, California; two grandchildren, James, Jr. (Betty Ann) Sloan, of Kissimmee, Florida, and Matthew Sloan, of El Dorado Hills, California; and one great-grandchild, Jaden Elizabeth Sloan; a brother, Vernon (Carol) Sloan, of Stryker, Ohio; two sisters, Gertrude Goachaee, of Snohomish, Washington, and Donna Belle (Clair) Jones, of Celina, Ohio. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, sisters and brother-in-law of Wilma’s and their families, cousins and very dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Shirley Wiley, and her husband, Joe, in 1991. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
