View Video Tribute Vernon L. Kimpel, age 88, of Edgerton, Ohio, died at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Park View Nursing Center in Edgerton, Ohio, where he was a resident. Mr. Kimpel was a service technician in plumbing and heating for more than fifty years with the Edgerton Hardware. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the Asia-Pacific Theater. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Edgerton Ohio, Knights of Columbus Council #1494 and John D. Smith Post #10, Edgerton American Legion, of which he was past Commander. Mr. Kimpel also served as a member of the Edgerton BPA and on the Edgerton Village Council, where he served as president. In 1996 he was named Edgerton’s Citizen of the Year. Vernon L. Kimpel was born on September 14, 1919, in Farmer Township of Defiance County, Ohio, the son of Edward and Glatus (Upp) Kimpel. He married Ruth M. Imm on October 4, 1947, in Edgerton, Ohio, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Kimpel is survived by five daughters, Jayne (Steven) Stuckey, of Marion, Indiana, H. Elaine (Edward) Vetter, of Lexington, South Carolina, Carolyn (William) Shininger, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Marlene (Patrick) Oxender, of Montpelier, Ohio, and Jeanette (Jim) Demlow, of Florence, South Carolina, five sons, Ed (Sue) Kimpel, of Edgerton, Ohio, Don (Karrie) Kimpel, of Edgerton, Ohio, Darrell (Becky) Kimpel, of Hicksville, Ohio, Lee (Andrea) Kimpel, of Lexington, South Carolina, and Steven Kimpel, of Edgerton, Ohio. Also surviving are a son-in-law, Jim Meyer, of Hicksville, Ohio, twenty-two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Lois James, of Hicksville, and one brother, Kenneth Kimpel, of Hicksville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcia Meyer, eight brothers, Ivan, Lavon, Melvin, Forrest, Gordon, Russell, Clair and Floyd, one sister, Maxine Wilson, two half-brothers, Glen Kimpel and Paul Miller, and one half-sister, Etho McKee. Services for Vernon L. Kimpel will be on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church in Edgerton, Ohio, with Father Stephen Schroeder officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Edgerton, Ohio, with grave side military rites conducted by John D. Smith Post #10 of the Edgerton American Legion. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home, Edgerton, Ohio, on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, from 1-5 and 6-8 p.m. with a scripture service to be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Memorials in the name of Vernon L. Kimpel may be given to Community Pregnancy Center of Bryan, Ohio, or St. Mary’s School.
