Nicholas W. Solonen, Sr., Ph.D., age 91, of rural Edon, Ohio and formerly of Westfield, New Jersey, died at 12:58 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Park View Nursing Center in Edgerton, Ohio where he was a resident. Dr. Solonen was a graduate of the State of University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He also received his Master and Ph. D. Degrees in Organic Chemistry from State University of Iowa in 1941 and 1943 respectively. His honors include membership in Phi Lambda Upsilon, Rho Chi and Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa. He taught at the University of North Dakota School of Pharmacy and was in Who’s Who in both high school and college. He spent most of his career as an organic research chemist in pharmaceutical research for Merck, Sharp and Dohme Pharmaceutical Company, White Laboratories and Sharing Plough Pharmaceuticals where he retired in 1973. His work and research resulted in several patents. Nicholas W. Solonen, Sr. was born December 19, 1913 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, the son of William and Aqualena (Chocklin) Solonen. He married Frieda C. Gross on April 11, 1942 in Muscatine, Iowa and she survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Paula Christine (Larry) Burkhart, of Edon, Ohio, two granddaughters, Stephanie Marie Walls, of Temple, Texas, Christine Olivia Birmingham, of Bryan, Ohio, one great grandson, Ethan Lyons, of Bryan, Ohio and one sister, Rose Manley, of Muscatine, Iowa. He was preceded in death by one son Nicholas W. Solonen, Jr. in 2001 and one sister, Ann Kent. Services for Nicholas W. Solonen, Sr., Ph.D. will be private, There will be no visitation.
