Roger M. Motter, age 89, of Ney, Ohio, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold, Ohio. The son of Martin and Emma (Perry) Motter, Roger was born December 28, 1920 near Ney. He attended Davis Business College and during World War II served with the Merchant Marines in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, based out of New York City. It is there in Manhattan, during the war, he met his wife, Muriel Junge. They were married on February 28, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Richmond Hill, New York and for the next sixty years resided at their farm on Beerbower Road near Ney. Roger was employed by GM Central Foundry in Defiance, retiring on February 29, 1984, with thirty-one years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling, gardening, winter skiing and became active in the Ohio Historical Society. He also served as president of the Defiance Chapter of the American Diabetes Association. He is survived by son, Brad (Susan Mitchell), of Syracuse, New York and granddaughter, Katharine, of Boston, Massachusetts; son, Russell, of Toledo, Ohio; daughter, Karen (Thomas) Hazelett, of Fremont, Indiana; two sisters, Dorothy Kaiser, of Edon and Donna Hines, of Phoenix, Arizona, and a brother Thurman, of Duncan, Arizona. Muriel preceded him in death in May of 2008. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan, Ohio, from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Private interment will take place in Ney Cemetery. The family would like to thank their home caregivers and Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home, Archbold, for their help and support. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends consider a memorial to the Defiance County Humane Shelter.
