Robert J. Mayer, age 85, of Edgerton, Ohio, died at 1:00 A.M. on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Florida, where he was a patient. Mr. Mayer was a former co-owner of Universal Tool in Butler, Indiana, and Precise Manufacturing in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He also had operated Bryan Electric and Electric Motor Shop in Bryan, Ohio, for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. Robert J. Mayer was born on March 2, 1925, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of William A. and Anna Marie (Herres) Mayer. He married Ruth L. Simmons-Hodgdon on August 13, 1994, in Edgerton, Ohio, and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Ann (Mark) Thomson, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Robert S. Mayer, Gail (Larry) Sito and Susan Glasgow, all of Bryan, Ohio, William (Sue) Mayer, of Waterloo, Indiana, and Linda Benson, of Fremont, Indiana, two stepchildren, Jeanne (John) McRae, of Bradenton, Florida, and Charles Hodgdon II, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, fifteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Holly Mayer, two stepsons, George and Jimmy Hodgdon, two brothers, Bill and Donald, two sisters, Helen Roussey and Joan Axelson, and his first wife, Imogene (Allen) Mayer, in 1997. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Krill Funeral Home, Edgerton, Ohio. Services will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton, with Father Stephen Schroeder officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery with grave side military rites conducted by John D. Smith Post #10 of the Edgerton American Legion. Memorials are requested to a charity of the donor’s choice.
