Michael J. Gilbert, age 61, of Montpelier, Ohio, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, following a brief illness. Mike was a veteran of the United States Army, serving two tours in Vietnam. He was employed by the Montpelier Street Department for 18 years and retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation in January of 2008. Following his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at the Williams County Humane Society and mowing part-time for the Williams County Highway Department. Mike was a member of West Bethesda Presbyterian Church and had served as an elder. His love of horses led him to be active in the Williams County Mounted Unit from 2000 until present. Michael J. Gilbert was born on May 3, 1949, in Bryan, Ohio, the son of John J. Gilbert, of Bryan, and Phyllis Tressler Forstie, of Montpelier. He married Diane Custar on March 11, 1979, and she survives. Also surviving are his parents, two daughters, Tabitha (Aaron) Siebenaler, of Edgerton, Ohio, and Amy (Wayne) Murray, of Montpelier, four grandchildren, Brennen and Alyssa Siebenaler and Kyle and Zack Murray, one brother, Dan Gilbert, of Gilbertville, Pennsylvania, and one sister, Virginia Camp, of Alma, Michigan. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 10:00 A.M. in the New Hope Community Church, Bryan. Private interment will take place in Lockport Cemetery with grave side military rites conducted by Bryan VFW Post #2489. Preferred memorials are to the Williams County Humane Society.
