Donald L. Gruver, Sr.

Gruver, Sr., age 90, of Edgerton, Ohio, died at 12:25 a.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers in Montpelier, where he was a patient. Mr. Gruver operated Gruver’s Grocery in Edgerton for seventeen years and then was employed by Lutterbein Lumber Company for nineteen years. He was a member of the Edgerton United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Men and was involved with the local food bank for over fifty years and retired in 2005 after serving many years as chairman of the food pantry. He served many years as treasurer of the Ministerial Association and was instrumental in starting Cub Scouts in Edgerton and served as cub master in the 1950s. He served on the Edgerton Tree Commission for many years and in 1994 he and his wife, Ruby, were named citizens of the year in Edgerton. Donald L. Gruver, Sr. was born on Februray 27, 1916, in Rensselaer, Indiana, the son of Floyd and Helen (Ramey) Gruver. He married Ruby B. Obendorf on February 26, 1939, in Newville, Indiana, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Gruver is survived by one son, Donald L. Gruver, Jr., of Bryan, Ohio, twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Carl Gruver, of Pioneer, Ohio, and one sister, K. Betty Thomas, of Ocala, Florida. He was preceded in death by one son, William C. Gruver, one daughter, Marilyn Madoux, two brothers and one sister. Services for Donald L. Gruver, Sr. will be on Monday, October, 9, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in the Edgerton United Methodist Church with Pastor Tim Gleason officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Edgerton. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home, Edgerton, Ohio, from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday, October 8. Memorials in the name of Donald L. Gruver, Sr. may be given to the Edgerton United Methodist Church or the Edgerton Food Pantry.
