Hershel H. Skiles

Hershel H. Skiles, age 89, of rural Edon, Ohio, died at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2007, in Park View Nursing Center in Edgerton, Ohio, where he was a resident. Mr. Skiles was a machinist and farmer and had worked at Powers and Sons for seventeen years and also for Halls Machine for seventeen years prior to his retirement in 1983. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of the Edon American Legion Post #662, Bethlehem Christian Union Church, Edon Farmers Co-op and the Northwest Grange. Hershel H. Skiles was born on July 13, 1918, in Licking, Missouri, the son of Davis E. and Alice M. (Cotton) Skiles. He married Evelyn Kimpel in 1944 and she preceded him in death on July 20, 1962. He then married Gladys Weber on August 13, 1963, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Skiles is survived by two daughters, Alice Mae (Bruce) Miller and Jane I. Robinett, both of Montpelier, Ohio, two sons, Dean H. Skiles, of Montpelier, Ohio, and Steve W. (JoAnn) Skiles, of West Unity, Ohio, and three stepchildren, K. Paul (Marcia) Hilbert, of Anchorage, Alaska, Sue (Mike) Bowling, of Montpelier, Ohio and Mary Hilbert, of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, eleven stepgrandchildren, fourteen stepgreat-grandchildren, two brothers, Howard (Thelma) Skiles, of Montpelier, Ohio, and Hugh “Mac” Skiles, of Camden, Michigan, and one sister, Oleen Faulhaber, of Edon, Ohio. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two stepsons, Larry and Ted Jewell, and one sister, Alma Fox. Services for Hershel H. Skiles will be on Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bethlehem Christian Union Church with Pastor Phil Harris and Pastor Daniel Shipley officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Edgerton, Ohio, with grave side military rites conducted by Edon American Legion Post #662. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home in Edon, Ohio, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, September 3. Memorials in the name of Hershel H. Skiles may be given to the Bethlehem Christian Union Church.
