Burkhardt, Jr, age 83, of Edon, Ohio, died on Friday, November 24, 2006, at the Dilworth Center of Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers in Montpelier, Ohio, where he was a patient. Mr. Burkhardt was a 1941 graduate of Edon, Ohio, High School and a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. He served as as a tail gunner with the 464th Bombardment Squadron in over fifty missions. Mr. Burkhardt worked in the Burkhardt Grocery as a meat cutter for many years and also as rural mail carrier in Edon, retiring with thirty-eight years of service. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Edon, Edon American Legion Post #662, Edon Masonic Lodge #474, of which he was a 60-year member, Bryan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2489, and the Montpelier Moose Lodge. He was an avid chess and bridge player. John H. Burkhardt, Jr. was born on August 31, 1923, in Edon, Ohio, the son of John H. and Eunice (Christofel) Burkhardt, Sr. He married Hester C. Welch on September 27, 1942, in Montpelier, Ohio, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Burkhardt is survived by one son, Paul (Beth) Burkhardt, of Edon, Ohio, two granddaughters, Erin Burkhardt, of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Lauren Burkhardt, of Edon, Ohio. He is also survived by one brother, George (Darlene) Burkhardt, of Edon. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis Burkhardt, and one sister, Ella Louise “Weasey” Berry. Services for John H. Burkhardt, Jr. will be on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, in Edon, Ohio, with Reverend Clayton J. Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in Edon Cemetery with grave side military rites conducted by Edon American Legion Post #662. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral in Edon, Ohio from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28. Masonic service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorials in the name of John H. Burkhardt may be given to the Dilworth Center of Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers in Montpelier, Ohio, or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
