Elizabeth (Libby) Meeker Martin, age 85, died Friday, October 26, 2007, at Hillside Country Living, near Bryan, Ohio, where she had been living for almost two years. Born April 24, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Howard R. and Harriett (Bowman) Meeker, she was the widow of former Indiana State Senator and President Pro-Tem, C. Wendell Martin, who preceded her in death on December 14, 2005. A 1943 graduate of Vassar College, she was the president of the Indiana Vassar Club and belonged to the Naples (Florida) Vassar Club. She was a Bible study leader for many years in Indianapolis, in Naples and in Bonita Springs, Florida, where she and her husband resided during the winters. In Presbyterian service, she had been president of the Indiana Synodical Society, The Indianapolis Presbyterial Society, as well as serving on the Indiana Presbytery and Indiana Synod Councils. She was active in drafting constitutions for many different Indiana Presbyterian bodies. She taught Sunday school, was a lay preacher, an elder, and speaker at churches throughout Indiana. She was a delegate to six national Presbyterian meetings. In 1986 she led the annual women’s retreat for the First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, Ohio. Through Prison Fellowship, she volunteered at the Indiana Women’s Prison from 1986 to 1994 and at the jail in Naples, Florida, and the Hendry State Prison near Immokalee, Florida. She served on the boards of the Junior League of Indianapolis, the Contemporary Club, Indianapolis Symphony Junior Group, Community Service Council of Indianapolis, and the Washington Township School Planning Committee. For many years she served on the Race Relations committee of the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis and on the Board of Flanner House. Surviving are a daughter, Connie (Stan) Tipton, of Bryan, Ohio, two sons, David (Cyndy) Martin, of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Frederic (Roberta) Martin, of Bemidji, Minnesota, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and her brother, Howard R. (Mary Jane) Meeker, of Indianapolis. A memorial service will be held at the Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 North Meridin Street, in Indianapolis, on Saturday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place at the church an hour before the service.
