Eugene R. “Gene” Brodbeck, age 86, of Bryan, Ohio, died at 4:50 A.M. on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice near Defiance, Ohio. Mr. Brodbeck was a veteran of the United States Air Force and had been employed as a machinist at The Aro Corporation in Bryan, retiring with forty-two years of service. He was a Life member of the West Unity American Legion and a member of the Montpelier Moose and the Bryan Eagles Aerie #2233. Gene enjoyed fishing and working in his garden and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Eugene R. “Gene” Brodbeck was born on April 8, 1931, in Burlington, Ohio, the son of Clarence and Madonna (Godell) Brodbeck. He married Mary J. “Cookie” VanPopple on February 17, 1956, in Angola, Indiana, and she survives. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Rusty (Deb Smith) Brodbeck, of Bryan, and Rocky Brodbeck, of Ney, Ohio; one daughter, Robin (Jeff) Wollet, of Walton Hills, Ohio; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Lou) Lanham, Chris Brodbeck, Michelle (Matt) Schuette, and Matthew (Ashley) Huffman; three great-grandchildren, Claire Morgan and Madi and Max Schuette; and one brother, Keith Brodbeck, of West Unity, Ohio. He was preceded in death by seven brothers; one sister; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Brodbeck. A reception celebrating the life of Eugene R. “Gene” Brodbeck will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 1:00-4:00 P.M. at Bryan Eagles Aerie #2233.
