Hazel M. Fifer, age 81, of Edon, Ohio, passed from this life on Saturday, October 7, 2017, while a patient at Parkview Heart Institute in Fort Wayne, Indiana, following a brief illness. Hazel was born on January 11, 1936, in Mohawk, West Virginia, the daughter of Nora (Hurley) and Stuard Lester, and grew up in Grundy, Virginia. In 1962, she and her first husband, Berton Rowe, and daughter, Linda, relocated to Bryan, Ohio, where she worked for Spangler Candy Company and Bryan Custom Plastics. She later married Lewis Fifer in 1971 and relocated to Edon. She was the owner of Edon Dairy Treat for seven years before going to work as office manager at Dimension Hardwood Veneers, retiring in 2004.
Hazel made a lasting impression on everyone she met with her spirited personality, positive attitude, charisma and sense of humor, making her unforgettable. She had a strong faith and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Blakeslee, Ohio, and was a loving and generous person who tremendously enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was an avid golfer and bowler and a member of the Red Hat Society and loved to play bingo and go shopping. Once a month you could usually find her taking a trip to the casino with friends. Hazel cherished the time with her family and one of her greatest joys was being able to share her life with her great-grandson. She was a wonderful mother, sister and grandmother and was an exceptional great-grandmother. Truly one in a million, she has given us enough love, laughter and memories to last a lifetime. She will be missed by all who were blessed to know and love her.
Left behind to cherish Hazel’s memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David Freed, of Edon; four grandsons, Jeremy Cape, of Toledo, Justin Cape, of Chicago, Dillon Freed, of New York, and Dalton Freed, of West Palm Beach; a great-grandson, Julian Christian Cape, of Toledo; five sisters, Mandy (Hayes) Horn, of Montpelier, Ohio, Beatrice White, of Rhoadsville, Virginia, Barbara (Fayne) Whited and Mildred (Jaycee) Stiltner, both of Grundy, Virginia, and Laura Crawford, of Hurley, Virginia; several nieces, nephews and many friends; and her faithful feline friends, Patches and Mouse. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Fifer; brother, Rufus “Buck” Lester; brothers-in-law, Edward Crawford and George White; and an infant brother, Wendell Lester.
Visitation will be held in the Krill Funeral Home, 204 West Indiana Street, Edon, on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, from 2:00-5:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Blakeslee, with Reverend Daniel Borgelt officiating.
