Roger Lee Wanner

May 22, 1945 — May 21, 2017

Roger Lee Wanner, 71, died peacefully on May 21, 2017, under hospice care in Defiance, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family, friends, and God’s grace. He was born on May 22, 1945, to Robert and Kathryn (Haas) Wanner. He grew up and worked on his parents’ large Fulton County farm and graduated in 1963 from Chesterfield High School in Lyons, Ohio. A product line supervisor for the Spangler Candy Company for nearly 31 years, Roger managed “Circus peanut” production, chocolates, and often DumDum pops. After he retired from Spangler Candy Company, Roger drove the Spangler Trolley and created his own successful pool care business in the Bryan area. Roger loved all things John Deere and was an Ohio State Buckeye fan through and through. Roger was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. An avid golfer, he was a member of Orchard Hills Golf Club and Highland Woods GCC. He loved to grill and cook for others and often entertained his guests on the Bocce Ball Court he built. Roger scored a “Hole in One” during night golf at Highland Woods GCC in Bonita Springs, Florida. The Fort Myers News Press covered his exciting moment on December 10, 2009. An excellent gardener, Roger’s “largest Better Boy tomato plant” was featured one summer in The Bryan Times. Roger loved every one of his many pets through the years. Roger is survived by his wife, Shelley, his nephew, Mark (Sheila) Wanner, his sister-in-law, Katharine (Richard) Heintschel, and his cats, Mittens and Katie Jane. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert, and his father and mother-in-law, Wilson and Marian Morris, of Waterville, Ohio. Shelley and her family would like to thank Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice program and the excellent hospital care staff at CHWC-Bryan, especially Dr. Mabus, Dr. Kesireddy and Judy Mayes. A service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 11:00 A.M. at Wesley United Methodist Church with visitation from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Burial will be at Wakeman Cemetery in Waterville, Ohio, at 3:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, friends may remember Roger with a gift to Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence, to the Williams County Humane Society, or to the church.
