John Edwin “Jack” Shaffer, age 89, of Bryan, Ohio, died at 12:47 P.M. on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, in his home after an extended illness. Mr. Shaffer was a lifelong resident of the Bryan and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed by the 50 and 50+5 Corporation as a foreman until retirement and then for MetalForge in Stryker, where he was also a foreman until retiring again. Jack was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and was a Life Member of Bryan VFW Post #2489, where he served as Post Commander from 1985-1986, and was active with the Firing Squad. He was also an avid bowler.
John Edwin “Jack” Shaffer, Sr. was born on January 9, 1927, in Bryan, the son of Perry John and Iva Rebecca (Priest) Shaffer. He married Donna L. Baker on June 28, 1947, in Bryan, and she survives.
Survivors also include two sons, Raymond (Dianne) Shaffer, of West Unity, Ohio, and Larry (Deena) Shaffer, of Bryan; one daughter, Lori DeGroff, of Bryan; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, John E. Shaffer, Jr.; and three sisters, Gretchen Deck, Harriet Carlin and Isabelle Carlin.
Grave side services will be held at Fountain Grove Cemetery in Bryan on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. with Ted Mathes officiating followed by grave side military rites conducted by Bryan VFW Post #2489 and the United States Navy Honor Guard.
Memorials are requested to Community Health Professionals Hospice, Bryan, Faith United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
