John H. Mergenthaler, age 82, of Montpelier, Ohio, died at 8:15 A.M. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, in his home at Nettle Lake after an extended illness. Mr. Mergenthaler was a graduate of Fostoria (Ohio) High School and attended Capital University and Bowling Green State University. He was a veteran of the United States Army and worked as an analytical chemist for Union Carbide and Morgan Crucible for forty-two years. He was a member of First Hope Lutheran Church in Fostoria and the Fostoria Lions Club. John was an avid reader and enjoyed hunting and water skiing. John R. Mergenthaler was born on May 11, 1933, in Sandusky County, Ohio, the son of Howard and Mildred (Serfoss) Mergenthaler. Survivors included a nephew, Charles (Chelcie) Stearns, of Rutland, Ohio; a niece, Charmayne Snyder, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two great-nieces, Aundrea Snyder, of Fort Wayne and Cinda Bratton, of Columbus, Ohio; a great-nephew, Marcus (Christina) Bratton, of Rutland, Ohio and two great-great-nephews, Adian Snyder, of Fort Wayne and Justus Bratton, of Rutland. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joan Hoover and June Stearns; and three nephews, Roger Stearns, Tommy Hoover and Allen Hoover. In keeping with John’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Private interment will take place in Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria, Ohio.
