Darrel “Gene” Fields, age 80, of West Unity, Ohio, died at 8:17 P.M. on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Brookview Healthcare Center in Defiance, Ohio, where he was a patient. Mr. Fields was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1952-1973. He served in both Korea and Vietnam, retiring as a Tech Sergeant. Following the Air Force, he settled in North Charleston, South Carolina, and worked in the Charleston County School District for thirteen and a half years. He was also a 33rd Degree Mason. Darrel “Gene” Fields was born on April 12, 1933, in Eaton, Indiana, the son of Earl W. and Twilo (Norton) Fields. He married Patsy R. Owens on June 21, 1955, in Lovington, New Mexico, and she survives. Survivors also include one daughter, Connie (Michael E.) Lowe, of West Unity; one son, Clyde (Carolyn) Fields, of Los Angeles, California; three grandchildren, Erica Briggs, Brandon Hill and Jonathon Fields; four great-grandchildren, Colby Briggs, Peyton Briggs, Gabriel Hill and Jacob Hill; and one sister, Orthea Monroe, of Muncie, Indiana. He was preceded in death by one sister, Wandola Coffman. Services will take place in North Charleston, South Carolina, with Carolina Memorial Funeral Home handling of arrangements. Local arrangements are being handled by Krill Funeral Service, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan, Ohio.
