Rex J. Smith, age 86, of Bryan, Ohio, died at 8:50 P.M. on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance, Ohio, where he was a patient. Mr. Smith was a 1945 graduate of Farmer High School and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as a truck driver for fifty years, beginning his career with Refiners Trucking and then working for 50 Corporation, Bryan Truck Lines and Pet Milk Corporation until the plant closed. He also farmed the family farm for many years. In his younger years he enjoyed playing the accordion and was an avid polka dancer. Rex Junior Smith was born on June 5, 1927, at home in Hicksville, Ohio, the son of Virgil and Opal (Osmun) Smith. He married Dorothy A. Morthland on January 16, 1952, in Warrensburg, Illinois, and she survives. Survivors also include one son, Marvin (Marilyn) Smith, of Bryan; three daughters, Marilyn (Richard) Hetrick, of Ney, Ohio, Marsha (Bruce Gordon) Smith, of North Bend, Washington, and Marie (Timothy) Miller, of Montpelier, Ohio; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter. Services will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. in the Krill Funeral Home, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan, with Pastor Roger Marlow officiating. Interment will follow in Farmer Cemetery with grave side military rites conducted by Bryan VFW Post #2489. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, and for two hours prior to the service, beginning at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 23, 2014, in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan.
