Iona Gertrude (Krill) Koerner, age 92, of Edgerton, Ohio, died on Monday, December 24, 2012, at Aiken Regional Medical Center in Aiken, South Carolina, where she was currently residing. The eldest child of Arthur Emanuel and Mattie Elsie (Johnson) Krill, Iona was born on March 18, 1920, at the family home in Defiance County, near Edgerton, Ohio. She attended Tamarac School, graduated from Edgerton High School in 1937, and studied at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1941. She subsequently worked as an Assistant Nursing Arts Instructor. She married Joseph Willman Koerner on November 28, 1943, in Edgerton and they operated a dairy farm near Edgerton until their retirement years, which they spent in Aiken, South Carolina. Joseph preceded her in death on September 16, 2008, after sixty-four years of marriage. She was an active member of the Edgerton United Methodist Church. Iona is survived by six children, William (Jane) Koerner, of Bowling Green, Ohio, Jane Mallin of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Phyllis (William) Donberg, of Kewadin, Michigan, Patricia Bailey, of Aiken, South Carolina, Gregory (Marla) Koerner, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Edward Koerner, of North Lewisburg, Ohio. She was also blessed with nine grandchildren, Katherine (Steve) Isler, Elizabeth (Andrew) Issitt, Sarah (Keith) Mallin, Joseph (Laura) Mallin, Jill Donberg, Benjamin (Jaina) Donberg, Jacques Appleby, Carissa Mines, Catherine Bailey, and three great-grandchildren, Antoni Lugin, Abigail Isler and Benjamin Isler. Survivors also include her sister, Marcella Grace (Robert) Koerner, of Edgerton, and one sister-in-law, Lois (Krill) Hays, of Sarasota, Florida. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Galen Eugene Krill and a son-in-law, MacDonald Bailey. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 P.M. in the Krill Funeral Home in Edgerton. Services will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at 10:00 A.M. in the Edgerton Emanuel United Methodist Church with Reverend R.L. Barnett officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Edgerton. In lieu of flowers, memorials given to Regency Hospice of Aiken, South Carolina, American Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice will be appreciated by the family.
