Virginia Mae Kunisch

December 28, 1925 — August 24, 2012

Virginia Mae (Hug) Kunisch, 86, passed away on August 24, 2012, at her daughter’s home in Sylvania, Ohio. She was born near Edon, Ohio, on December 28, 1925, to August and Flora Hug (Ries). She married Raymond J. Kunisch of Toledo on June 11, 1949, and raised seven children. Virginia graduated from the St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1948 and loved working in the nursery at St. Vincent Hospital after graduation and until she started her family. She continued to work for the Nurses Registry of Toledo for 30 years, doing private duty in homes and hospitals. She served as secretary, president and on the board of directors of the Registry over those years. Many of Virginia’s children followed in her footsteps into the health care field. A devoted mother of seven, she was dedicated to her Catholic faith and was an active member of Blessed Sacrament parish for most of her life. She sang in the choir at Little Flower Catholic Church, where her brother was a priest, and later in life became a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and travelling. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Raymond J. Kunisch; sisters, Olivene Dietsch, Dorothy Siebenaler and Marlene Alter; and brothers, Fr. Frederick Hug, Fr. Edward Hug and Relmond Hug. She is survived by her brother, Eldred (Art) Hug, and seven children: Dr. Patricia A. Diamond (Dr. Victor Akylas), of Los Gatos, California; Fred Kunisch, of Houston, Texas; Karen Holler (Ed), of Sylvania, Ohio; Mary Macawile (George), of Hollywood, Florida; Dr. Robert Kunisch (Debi), of Round Rock, Texas; James Kunisch (Carol), of Modesto, California; and Joseph Kunisch (Elle), of Houston, Texas. She also leaves seven grandchildren. Services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Edgerton, Ohio, on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family may call at 9:30 a.m. until the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 133 West Bement Street, Edgerton, Ohio 43517, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
