Joseph H. “Big Joe” Bornholdt, age 79, of Archbold, Ohio, and formerly of Chicago, Illinois, died at 9:40 P.M. on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice near Defiance, Ohio, where he was a patient. Mr. Bornholdt attended Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago and was an avid supporter of the Mt. Carmel football program. He graduated from Iowa State University and was a passionate horseman and spent many years working at the Chicago Stock Yards with his father as a cattle buyer and then went on to trade commodities at the Chicago Merchantile Exchange. In 1984, Joe moved to Archbold, which he called home, and became a regular at Ickey's, where he earned the nickname “The Colonel." Mr. Bornholdt was a veteran of the United States Marines. Joseph H. Bornholdt was born on October 30, 1931, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Walter and Margaret (Lyons) Bornholdt. Surviving are his six children, Michael Lee Bornholdt, of New Orleans, Louisiana, Mark Edward Bornholdt, of Oakland, California, Lisa Marie McCormack, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Jennifer Sagartz, of Chicago, Kara Ann Tharp, of Michigan City, Indiana, and Margaret Rose Bornholdt, of Archbold, ten grandchildren, Eric and Daniel Bornholdt, Juliet Bornholdt, Patrick and Keenan McCormack, Emma Sagartz, Declan, Carey Rose, Aden and Keeley Tharp, and his former wife of twenty-six years, Mary Susan Jorgensen. Memorials services will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Archbold, with Father Gary Ferguson officiating. Service arrangements are being conducted by Krill Funeral Service, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan, Ohio.
