James J. Shiple, age 86, of Edgerton, Ohio, died at 3:34 P.M. on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice near Defiance, Ohio, where he was a patient. Mr. Shiple was a graduate of Perrysburg High School and began his work career in production at Libby Owens-Ford Glass Company from 1944-1946, worked in appliance service for Buhl and Sons Company from 1946-1949, and was service manager and district manager at Walding-Kinnan & Marvin from 1946-1956. He then moved from Toledo and went to work for the Edgerton Hardware, which he became owner of in 1965 and sold to his son, Jim, in 1985. Jim was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Edgerton, where he served on the parish council and was a church councilman and Eucharistic minister. He was past president of the Edgerton Chamber of Commerce, was on the board of directors for Miller Park and was a Little League coach. He was also a trustee for the Ohio Hardware Association, was a member of the Edgerton Men’s Study Club, the Edgerton Rotary Club, of which he was a past president and was selected as Rotarian of the Year in 1974 and 1991. He was formerly a director of the Mid Am Bank advisory board in Edgerton and was citizen of the year in Edgerton in 1992. James J. Shiple was born on January 12, 1925, in Perrysburg, Ohio, the son of Fred and Myrtle (Velliquette) Shiple. He married Margaret M. Gaiffe on February 15, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on August 20, 2008. Mr. Shiple is survived by two sons, James M. (Paula) Shiple and Joseph Shiple, both of Edgerton, two grandchildren, Philip (Rachelle) Shiple, of Antwerp, Ohio, and Stephanie Bexten, of Montpelier, Ohio, two stepgrandchildren, Jeff Gruver, of Edgerton, and Amy Gruver, of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Corey and Casey Everetts, Dana Conley and Connar Shiple, and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Rachel, Catie and Adam Gruver. Also surviving are two sisters, Carolyn Smith, of Columbia, South Carolina, and Ursula Pauken, of Toledo, Ohio, and one brother, Thomas J. Shiple, of Oregon, Ohio. He was also preceded in death by parents, three brothers and two sisters. Services for James J. Shiple will be on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton, with Father Art Niewiadomski. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the church for one prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M., on Saturday. Memorials in the name of James J. Shiple may be given to St. Mary School or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
