E. Burton "Burt" Hazlett, Sr., age 91, of Bryan, Ohio, died at 6:35 A.M. on Saturday, January 1, 2011, in his home after an extended illness. Mr. Hazlett was employed by the G.C. Murphy Company, starting at the age of seventeen. He came to Bryan and opened the local G.C. Murphy store in 1957, and remained as its manager until it closed. He retired as store manager of the Defiance, Ohio, store with forty-four years of service in 1981, and was later associated with Buckeye Variety. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was active with the Bryan Chamber of Commerce, Bryan Retail Merchants, of which he was past president, Bryan Masonic Lodge #215, and Moose Lodge #1064, was a charter member of the Bryan Kiwanis Club and also was a longtime supporter of Boy Scouting in Bryan and former cub scout pack leader. In later years he enjoyed traveling in his RV and fishing and was a member of the Friends of Harrison Lake. E. Burton "Burt" Hazlett, Sr. was born on September 21, 1919, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, the son of William and Kathryn (Billingsley) Hazlett. He married Marjorie L. Horn on July 6, 1945, in Monessen, Pennsylvania, and she survives. Also surviving are three sons, Ernie (Margaret) Hazlett, of Mansfield, Ohio, Richard Hazlett, of Bryan, and Ron (Nancy) Hazlett, of Toledo, Ohio, one daughter, Susan Wammes, of Bowling Green, Ohio, and three grandchildren, Chris and Sarah Wammes, and Heidi (Nate) Henschen. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and William Hazlett. Services for E. Burton "Burt" Hazlett, Sr. will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at 12:00 P.M. in the Krill Funeral Home, 860 West Mulberry Street, Bryan, with Bill Priest officiating. Interment will follow in Shiffler Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 4, two hours prior to the service, from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Memorials are requested to Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers Hospital Hospice or the Bryan Public Library.
